AMID MUCH HELPLESS GROPING (Poems From 15-50)
– by Alan J. Carter
48 pages £4.00 UK £4.50 (Rest of Europe)
£5/$10 U.S. (Rest of the World)

Alan’s first Collection through Q.Q.Press and the book which sparked off the whole Q.Q.Press/Quantum Leap publishing venture. (“Amid Much Helpless Groping” because that’s how I view the human condition and nothing to do with an offence that would see you in trouble with the law!)

As the sub-heading suggests, this was a celebration of finally getting into print and the book contains poems written over a 35 year period, from pimply adolescence to greying middle-age! The many poems in it are drawn from a wide variety of styles and forms – love poetry, comic poetry, rhyming poetry, free verse, classically constructed, experimental, and concrete/shaped poetry. This has been reprinted five times and is still selling!

LOVE AND LAUGHTER (and other such Impostors)
– by Alan J. Carter
48 pages £4.00 UK £4.50 (Rest of Europe)
£5/$10 U.S. (Rest of the World)

Alan’s second Collection through Q.Q.Press. This collection - as befits a marriage of such impostors - has, in the best tradition of weddings, something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue — in fact, something for everyone : happy poems, sad poems, love poems, daft poems, rhyming poems, free verse poems, experimental poems, and some which haven’t quite made up their minds!

Some of the poems have been published before, others are brand spanking new, others yet are from way back when and, tired of being ignored and neglected, fought their way out of folders and drawers to stake their claim for a place in the collection. Love and laughter are two things which the world could do with a lot more of and many of the poems have been selected to bring a smile to your face in one way or another. However, life being what it is, both love and laughter can be cruel impostors and these, too, you will find dotted about the book.

COVERED IN RHYME (Poetry: Its Forms & Terms)
By Alan J. Carter and Bernard M. Jackson
Published by Q.Q. Press in Two Parts (108 pages)
U.K. £6.00. Rest of Europe £7.80. Rest of World £9.00/$20 U.S. Incl. P&P

Covered in Rhyme is published in two parts and the price is for both books. The books set out to explain, in the simplest of words - we hope! - not only the various forms of poetry, but the words and phrases often used in the field of poetry, which can sometimes puzzle those who come across them, while reading and writing poetry.

In Part One of the book you will find articles which Bernard has written on the various forms of poetry, ranging from The Villanelle to Pattern Poetry. (37 different forms in total .) In these he not only explains exactly what they are and how to write them but includes some of his own poems as illustrations of how it should be done. In Part Two of the book you will find short pieces written by Alan, designed as a glossary of poetic and literary terms. Here, the main heading of each form and term is in bold type in alphabetical order - e.g. Alliteration and Zeugma - with cross-referencing for related terms, and where there are several names used for the same thing. There are paragraphs on every heading explaining just what each means.

A BOOK OF THE BLUES – by Alan J. Carter

KITE SONGS AND ICICLE PONIES by Alan J. Carter
£2.50 UK, £3 Rest of Europe, £3.50/$7 U.S. Rest of the World

Wouldn’t you just know it - just like buses! You wait ages for one and then they all come along together! A Book of the Blues & Kite Songs and Icicle Ponies are two books of Alan’s song lyrics that have finally seen the light of day - and hopefully, even as you read this, are being considered by at least one band and one singer — but if YOU are a singer/songwriter or in a band and would like to try to put music to any of them please DO send for them.

LOVE SONGS, BUFF LADIES AND CHORTLES GALORE by Alan J. Carter
64pp £5UK, £6 Rest of Europe, £7/$14US Rest of the World

At last the work pressures have eased a little and Alan’s 3rd Collection is finally finished. As the title suggests, the collection contains both serious and comic verse - and as with his previous collection Love and Laughter abound.

Some of the poems in this collection are for, and about, real people, and I think they’ll recognise this when they see them, so I don’t need to dedicate them at all; some of the poems, as with many poets’ work, are just made up/fantasy; some of the poems are a mixture of the two; but the one thing they all have in common is that they are written with love - a love that believes that love IS the answer, as that is what I believe. That may make me a bit of a dinosaur and a bit of dreamer, in these days of celebrity worship, shallow relationships, and self-gratification, but I’m happy to be a dreamer and every dinosaur has his day: this one is mine!
